Materials
The various forms of asbestos can be found in a wide variety of materials, and were used because of their remarkable qualities of heat insulation, fire and corrosion resistance or because their fibrous nature can give a material much greater strength. Common applications include:
Product Form of asbestos product
Wall insulation in industrial units
Roofing and cladding
Pipe and boiler insulation
Building component protection
Ornamental paint finishes
Vinyl floor tiles
Office partitions and false ceiling tiles
Gaskets and seals, fire blankets
Bitumenised felt
Simulated roofing ‘slates’
There are many more in common use. Unless these materials are identified, you cannot be sure that no-one in your property will come in to contact with asbestos fibres, and this may leave you open to prosecution and legal claims. See Health Issues for information on health matters.
